Your body senses danger and your fight or flight reaction is triggered. This is an automatic response from our nervous system to warn us and prepare us for dangerous situations. Our bodies release cortisol to our adrenal glands, sometimes causing our bodies to go into overdrive. You become breathless, feel dizzy, get a tension headache, feel sick or have a panic attack. Symptoms for anxiety can appear in so many ways depending on how your body responds to it. Though often very overwhelming, these symptoms are completely harmless and are actually part of our genetic instinct.
Sometimes the cause of anxiety is easy to pinpoint, like the fear of needles or exam stress. However at other times, it is less clear what the cause could be and so we need to dig deeper to find the root.
Some psychological symptoms (the thoughts or altered perceptions we have) of anxiety are:
-Thinking that you might die
-Thinking that you may lose control and/or ‘go mad’
-Thinking that you may have a heart attack/be sick/faint/have a brain tumour
-Feeling that people are looking at you and observing your anxiety
-Feeling as though things are speeding up/slowing down
-Feeling detached from your environment and the people in it
-Feeling like you want to run away/escape from the situation
-Feeling on edge and alert to everything around you
